Once you’ve explored Hanoi city on your own perhaps you’ll decide to take a motorbike tour around the area. Then realise you don’t have the weeks available as many others do it. Van Phuc Silk Village is for you then! We’ve met a lot of visitors who would like to visit some of the nice pagodas, lakes, villages just outside Hanoi, but they wouldn’t like to sit in a van all day. Better to experience the real Vietnamese lifestyle, that of riding on motorbikes through cities, traffic, rice fields etc. So here’s a day tour for you designed with that specific purpose: taking you to some nearby villages and pagodas, all that on as authentic motorbikes as possible
We’ll wake up early and wait for the morning commute traffic to subside, leaving Hanoi around 9AM. Heading to Ha Dong district and switching to a small road leading us to our first destination of Van Phuc silk village on the south western borders of Hanoi. The village is small, so we’ll park our bikes and continue a tour on foot. We will be visiting some local houses and workshops where they work and produce their ethnic products of silk. The village is not just famous here for Hanoians, but all around Vietnam, and their products are shipped out all over the country. Chances are if you bought some local made silk products in Hoi An, those were actually from Van Phuc. And now you have the opportunity to purchase them directly from the manufacturer!
The village is so famous, in fact, that the whole place looks like a massive, colourful market. So make sure you take advantage of the first-hand prices of producers and stock up on souvenirs – and don’t forget to bargain of course!
We then continue on through Thach That district towards two beautiful pagodas, the Thay and Tay Phuong pagodas. The first known for being situated between two limestone mountains and with a stunning green natural lake in front of it. Tay Phuong being on a hill and more known for the carved wooden statues inside it.
We’ll learn about the pagodas, the religion and local customs, then we’ll have lunch nearby in a local restaurant. In the afternoon we’ll continue on through some local villages and visit nearby pagodas not often seen by tourists.
Finishing our tour around 3PM, we’ll head out to Thang Long highway and ride back to Hanoi to end our tour in the late afternoon.
